The tomb of the unknown soldier is never unguarded and I was lucky enough to watch “changing of the guard” a few years ago, when visiting Washington DC. It’s a somber experience.
The soldiers never leave their post. Someone is guarding the tomb every hour of every day, no matter the conditions; 20 below zero and snowing – someone is there; 105 degrees and 95% humidity – someone is there.
18 years ago, during the September 11th attacks – when the soldiers had no idea if the whole city would be attacked – they continued walking guard duty.
These soldiers are amazing and it was incredible to learn about the commitment they make.
